Case #90 - Gary Dykes

$15.00

In case 90 I'm joined by Ms. Alison Helmetsie of Ithaca, NY USA and Mr. Gary Dykes of Athens, GA USA. Alison is an outpatient orthopedic therapist who presents a case of a 59 year-old female with the complaint of left shoulder pain. Her medical diagnosis was biceps tendinitis. I facilitate a discussion between Alison and Gary, a seasoned MDT clinician and senior faculty, regarding the treatment of this extremity patient who possibly has a spinal component, and why it is so important to remain methodical. They go into detail as to how to keep the patient engaged and compliant with the "new way" of diagnosing and treating extremities by clearing the spine and the use of functional and mechanical baselines. Great clinical reasoning skills, validations of your thought processes, and helpful resources wise to use in this case between a certified MDT clinician and MDT senior faculty.(1hr, 42min, 21sec)

Amongst plenty other takeaways Gary shares thoughts on:

  • educating the patient early on as to what will happen in the assessment and what is most important

  • how to funnel your classifications down when symptoms are or aren’t present distal to the knee or elbow

  • a common strength loss pattern with patients with cervical and shoulder origin symptoms

  • how he uses a dry erase board to educate his patients and mutually discover information
