Episode 57 – Yoav Spurn, Part 2: Delivering Care and Education Worth Paying For

Yoav Suprun DPT, Dip MDT, CSCS

Show Notes

Greatest Challenge

Getting the education to both the healthcare providers and the general public of what a mechanical therapist is capable of doing is one of our greatest challenge.  Yoav has simply asked those he meets who have connections to local and regional journalists or other media professionals to help get the word out and allow him to featured as journalists are continually looking for an interesting story.

At the end of the day, Yoav believes that large, self-insured companies and their data will create a change that will make significant headway into setting more effective clinicians and treatment apart from others and encourage more clinicians to learn MDT principles.

Memorable Patient Story

He remembers a patient with a significant lateral shift who passed out during the attempted shift correction.  And although he wasn’t pain free upon the completion of that evaluation, he was much improved and he was appreciative of the knowledge of his condition and his prognosis.

Best Advice

Take time to educate your patients.  Don’t rush your patients.  Really take the time to get what’s important across to the patient.

Patient Education Analogy

Yoav uses the illustration of pressure restricting water flow in a garden hose to explain the effect of mechanical compression in the spine on a nerve.

Resources

Google Alerts helps Yoav share relevant information.  And he also really values the senior faculty within the Institute.

Impactful Studies

Does it matter which exercise? A randomized control trial of exercise for low back pain.
Long A, Donelson R, Fung T. Spine (Phila Pa 1976). 2004 Dec 1;29(23):2593-602.

Personal Habit Contributing to Success

Yoav limits his sitting using a stand up desk to reduce its detrimental effects.  He believes “sitting is the new smoking.”
